Discovering Potential at the Kroc Center!

Mrs. Joan Kroc envisioned a place where people of every age and circumstance were encouraged to explore their unique gifts and talents. Her vision was to create a place where all people regardless of social status had access to a world-class recreational, educational and cultural-arts facility. She expressed her desire that “tens of thousands of children” would be able to enjoy such a facility. And, she saw The Salvation Army as the perfect partner for creating such a place.

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center located in South Omaha is such a place. It offers a holistic experience by providing a variety of programs, events and services in education, the arts, athletics and spiritual development to people of all ages throughout the metro area.

THE SALVATION ARMY RESPONDS TO IOWA TORNADO DISASTERS

The Salvation Army disaster services teams from Omaha, Nebraska and Sioux City, Iowa were on the scene in Mapleton, Iowa early Sunday morning after a tornado ripped through Monona County on Saturday evening.  Salvation Army Emergency Services director, John Kuzma, employees and volunteers provided food and hydration to first responders, residents and volunteers.  The Sioux City Salvation Army continues to provide emergency relief services in Mapleton and Early, Iowa.

Captain Linda Vandiver, Siouxland Corps Officer, along with Kuzma, toured the affected areas with officials yesterday assessing the damage and making plans for clean-up and long term recovery. "We are here for you and your people, and we want to help your communities rebuild from this major disaster." said Vandiver.  The Siouxland Salvation Army, based in Sioux City, returned to the post this morning and will remain on-site for as long as needed.   For more information call Captain Von or Linda Vondiver at 712.253.2755.

More than 400 meals were served yesterday from the Early, Iowa command post and a similar amount were provided in Mapleton.
At this time, The Salvation Army is not accepting material donations.  Monetary contributions, earmarked Tornado Relief, may be sent to The Salvation Army, 3612 Cuming Street, Omaha, Nebraska or made online at www.givesalvationarmy.org.  Contributions may also be mailed to The Sioux City Salvation Army, P.O. Box 783, Sioux City, Iowa, 51102.

The Western Divisional Headquarters of The Salvation Army, located in Omaha, Nebraska, is often the first on the scene of local disasters in its area of Nebraska, western Iowa and South Dakota, and the last to depart.  It provides hydration and meals to disaster workers and volunteers, counsels victims, and provides material assistance such as meals, lodging, clothing and transportation. Its staff and volunteers work in cooperation with other agencies to assure that those impacted by disaster receive immediate help.

Salvation Army in Japan Begins Earthquake Response
Text-to-Give donation number announced

The Salvation Army in Japan is responding to the earthquake and tsunami that brought devastation to the north of the country. Communication and travel have been badly hit by the disaster, and at the moment the true cost in human life and property can only be guessed.

The most damaged city is Sendai, about 400 kilometers away from Tokyo. Commissioner Makoto Yoshida, leader of The Salvation Army's Japan Territory, was at territorial headquarters in Tokyo and reports: 'Our building swayed tremendously. It was hard for us to keep standing and many of us were really frightened.'

He adds: 'We are sending a team to Sendai tonight (March 11) and tomorrow we will start providing the basic necessities as well as assessing the level of damage so we can decide what else we can do.'
Public transport in Tokyo stopped because of the earthquake, leaving many commuters unable to leave work. Commissioner Yoshida says: 'We opened our hall on the ground floor of territorial headquarters to those who could not go home. We served them with hot drinks and packed meals.'

General Shaw Clifton, the international leader of The Salvation Army, has already been in touch with the commissioner to assure him of the prayers and support of Salvationists around the world.
